The Three Rivers Chapter (Athens area) of the National Wild Turkey Federation (NWTF) held a JAKES conservation field day last Saturday at Roddy Sturdivant's RSE farms in Oglethorpe County.

JAKES is an outreach program of NWTF for youth 13 years and younger, and the conservation field days are held to educate youngsters on a broad array of outdoor activities and wildlife conservation practices.
JAKES stands for Juniors Acquiring Knowledge, Ethics and Sportsmanship, and expands the mission of NWTF beyond just turkey hunting to wildlife habitat and management.
The day was perfect, better conditions could not have been ordered. The temperature was in the mid-70s, the sky was filled with puffy white clouds blowing by, and a steady breeze softened the heat produced by a steady sun.
RSE Farms is a little hidden jewel, situated in the middle of Oglethorpe County, and the perfect venue for a youth-oriented program. In addition to immaculately manicured grounds, Roddy Sturdivant has built and made available a log building that contains his own natural history museum, a meeting hall that will hold approximately 100 people, and a 12-acre lake.
It was worth the trip just to ride to the country and see the layout of this unique property and visit the private museum.
